Remembering a Distinguished and Respected Territorian

The Arts Minister Gerry McCarthy today recognised the significant contribution of one of the Northern Territory’s most distinguished and respected artists Wamud Namok.

Mr McCarthy said the death of Mr Namok is a great loss to the Northern Territory.

“The Northern Territory Government offers its sincere condolences to the family of Mr Namok, a distinguished and respected Indigenous leader,” he said.

“He lived an extraordinary life and his influence will continue to be felt across the Territory for many generations to come.

“Around the world Mr Namok is recognised as an exceptional artist – his works are displayed in the most distinguished galleries and museums in Australia and overseas.

“However, it is his remarkable character that will leave a long lasting effect on Territorians.

“Wamud Namok was a man of great dignity and humility who treated everyone he met with generosity and patience.

“Through this spirit of generosity he was able to share his knowledge of the Territory with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

“His knowledge of Territory history, places, land management and available resources and religious significance has become invaluable in recent years.”

Anthropologists, art historians, botanists and other researchers from social and natural sciences sought out the wisdom of Mr Namok as they studied the Northern Territory and Indigenous Australians.

Mr McCarthy said this knowledge has been documented and will continue to teach Australians about the diversity and significance of the Territory for many years to come.
