Accommodation Providers Receive Funding

More than $680 000 has been awarded to community housing groups in the Territory to provide improved accommodation and services for people with special needs and those in crisis.

 

Minister for Housing Rob Knight said the Federal funding would be administered by the Territory Government through the Community Housing Program.

 

“The Northern Territory Government is committed to tackling homelessness and social housing issues and this funding will assist community based agencies to provide accommodation services to those with special needs who require ongoing support,” Mr Knight said.

 

“It will assist those organisations which provide supported or unsupported accommodation services to continue to help those in need, or to expand their services.”

 

The organisations to receive funding include:

·                    Yilli Rreung Housing Aboriginal Corporation to purchase an accommodation unit for an Indigenous men’s transitional support service;

·                    Somerville Community Services to upgrade two accommodation facilities in Katherine and Nightcliff;

·                    St Vincent de Paul Society for initial headwork’s for a community housing estate and a volunteer Community Housing Board;

·                    The Salvation Army for a feasibility concept plan for the construction of transitional housing in Alice Springs;

·                    Dawn House for major maintenance and upgrade costs for four transitional housing properties;

·                    Darwin Christian Outreach Centre for the upgrade of rooms at the Berrimah facility.

 

Mr Knight said through the Territory Government’s Housing the Territory strategy more land will be delivered, there will be more new properties on the market and public housing will be reformed.

 

“This years budget delivers a 92% boost for housing and this program will provide additional services needed for people with special needs,” Mr Knight said.

 

“Tackling social housing issues and homelessness requires improvements to a wide range of programs and this Government is committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness.”
