Territory Growth Brings Change to Number Plates

The Northern Territory Government will soon make changes to registration plates across the Territory to accommodate the substantial population growth expected over the next ten years.

Transport Minister Gerry McCarthy said letters will be introduced to Territory number plates as there will soon be too many cars for six digit plates.

"As our economy continues to grow and more people move to the Territory for job opportunities and our great lifestyle we will reach the milestone of 1 million number plates," said Mr McCarthy.

"The growth of the Territory brings development and change, including more vehicles on our roads

“We are meeting the demands of this growth with a record road infrastructure budget which includes projects like the $110 million Tiger Brennan extension.

"Other logistical planning for future growth is also necessary and this includes the need for many more number plates now and well into the future.

"We have recently started the series of number plates beginning with 96X XXX which means there are about 40 000 numerical number plates left across the Territory.

"Once these numbers have been used all new registrations will receive plates with two letters followed by two numbers followed by two letters, for example:  CA 11 AA.

"All of the new alphabetical and numerical number plates will begin with the letter C which has been designated as the Territory identifier across Australia.

"These new plates will allow for more than 1.5 million number plates ensuring they will last well into the Territory's future, even with continued levels of growth.

“Like the existing number plates the print will be in orange on a white background with N.T Outback Australia at the bottom of all plates.

“Specialised and personal number plates will continue to be available and will not be changed by the introduction of letters to standard plates.

“This is an exciting time in the Territory's history with unprecedented growth and opportunities, new number plates are one small change which is necessary as the Territory continues to grow.”
