Rob Knight MINISTER FOR HOUSING |
The Expression of Interest Process today opened for the Wirrina Redevelopment as part of the Territory Government’s plan to redevelop public housing sites in Parap.
Minister for Housing Rob Knight and Member for Fannie Bay Michael Gunner today encouraged non-Government organisations and private developers interested in redeveloping the site to undertake the process.
“Through the Housing the Territory Strategy the Territory Government is committed to delivering more land, putting more new properties on the market and reforming public housing,” Mr Knight said.
“The Wirrina Redevelopment is underway with the demolition of the flats and townhouses now complete. This will be the first major redevelopment of housing stock and is a long term investment in the future of Parap.
“A new non-government Affordable Housing Rental Company is being established to provide quality and affordable rental to medium and low income earners and this redevelopment will provide more public housing stock and private units for low-to-middle income earners.
“Proposals are being sought for a modern, innovative and well designed, functional and energy efficient complex that enhances the Parap community.
The demolition of the units was first step in a three stage redevelopment of public housing along
Member for Fannie Bay Michael Gunner said he looks forward to the Expression of Interest Process.
“We have to get the balance right between private and public housing in Parap. High density public housing in Parap created hot spots for anti-social behaviour.
“This redevelopment will mean less anti social behaviour and will make Parap a safer place to live and visit,” Mr Gunner said.
Forty-five affordable rental housing dwellings in the Wirrina redevelopment will be funded through the Commonwealth Government’s stimulus package.
