Johnston Stage 2 gets the green light

The Development Consent Authority this week approved the second stage of the new Palmerston east suburb of Johnston.

Minister for Planning and Lands, Delia Lawrie, said Johnston stage two would deliver 299 lots ranging in size from 600 square metres to 1900 square metres and provide up to 535 new homes for Territorians

“This is part of the Henderson Government’s action to fast track land release in Palmerston East and provide more housing options for Territorians,” Ms Lawrie said.

“As part of the Housing the Territory scheme, the Henderson Government is setting aside 24 lots capped at $140,000 per lot for the affordable housing market. This is in addition to the 19 lots set aside for affordable housing in stage one.

“These initiatives together with the Territory Government’s Homestart and Buildstart schemes are helping more Territorians into their own home.”

Johnston stage two will be released to residential developers for auction in early 2010 with lots expected to be for sale off the plan shortly afterwards.

“The Government is spending $10 million to bring forward headworks including new roads, power, water and sewerage to fast track the release of land in Johnston.

“The announcement of approval for stage two follows the 200 lots in stage one that will provide 417 homes due for sale off the plan next month.

“The total development at Palmerston east will include four new suburbs and release up to 3700 new housing lots over the next five years and provide housing for about 15,000 people.

“Construction has begun on the 235 lots at the new suburb of Bellamack which also includes 15 per cent set aside for affordable and social housing.”
