Larrakia to Benefit from INPEX Project

International oil and gas company INPEX has signed an historic agreement with the Larrakia Development Corporation (LDC) over the Ichthys gas project

The Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson was present as LDC Chairman Koolpinyah Barnes signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with INPEX Browse Managing Director Seiya Ito in Tokyo today.

“The MOU is about a long-term partnership that will ensure Indigenous Territorians benefit from jobs and business prospects and environmental and heritage protections,” Mr Henderson said.

“The MOU acknowledges the Larrakia people’s aims to secure a strong economic future to improve the lives of Indigenous Territorians.

“Today’s ceremony demonstrates the commitment from INPEX to being a good corporate citizen in the Northern Territory

“INPEX has put down roots in Darwin – the FEED or Front End Engineering and Design work for the project is underway; the Environmental Impact Statement is in the process of being finalised; the company has established an office in Darwin and the site of a workers’ village has been identified.”

Mr Henderson said the MOU outlines the intentions and expectations for a mutually beneficial relationship between the LDC and INPEX.

“Bringing gas onshore will result in jobs for more than 2000 people at the peak of construction and create about 300 new, ongoing jobs,” he said.

“There will be many direct and indirect jobs and business opportunities for Territorians.”

“Everybody wins out of this agreement – the Territory is one step closer to a world-class project, the prospects for Indigenous Territorians will be lifted and INPEX has the backing of the traditional people of Darwin.”
