Minister Welcomes Support For New National Waste Policy

Environment Minister Karl Hampton today welcomed support for a new National Waste Policy by his State, Territory and Federal counterparts.

Mr Hampton said the new policy was one of the key outcomes at today’s Environment Protection and Heritage Council meeting in Perth.

“The Henderson Government is committed to providing a cleaner and greener environment for all Territorians,” Mr Hampton said.

“That’s why we welcome today’s endorsement of a new National Waste Policy, the first such framework charting a 10 year vision for resource recovery and waste management.

“A key focus within the new policy will be the recycling of electronic goods such as computers and televisions, free of charge.

“Under the new product stewardship scheme, 80 per cent of all computers and televisions are expected to be recycled by 2021.”

Mr Hampton also welcomed progress made towards national Container Deposit Legislation (CDL) but reiterated the Territory Government was ahead of other jurisdictions in developing its own CDL.

“We have always argued that national CDL is the best approach and that others should follow our lead,” Mr Hampton said.

“Fellow Ministers and I today heard expert advice on the preliminary findings of the modelling study which found strong support for CDL throughout the country.

“But we won’t wait for national agreement for Territorians to enjoy the benefits of CDL - we are developing a Territory-based scheme and will continue to work with relevant stakeholders to progress our policy.”

Mr Hampton will also attend meetings of the Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council and Primary Industries Ministerial Council during his time in Perth.
