Protecting The Territory’s Heavy Vehicle Transport Industry

Transport Minister Gerry McCarthy will lobby on behalf off the Territory transport industry at a meeting of the Australian Transport Council being held in Sydney today.

Mr McCarthy said the Territory faces unique challenges across all areas of transport and he would ensure these challenges are taken into consideration when interstate Ministers discuss National Transport Policy and Regulation Reforms.

“The national regulation of maritime safety, rail safety and heavy vehicles is an important step forward, however I will be asking the Transport Council to ensure productivity and efficiency is protected in the Territory as we continue to develop the reforms,” said Mr McCarthy.

“With the small disperse population of the Territory we rely on heavy vehicles to transport many of our essential goods and services across the Territory.

“The productivity and efficiency of this industry in the Territory needs to be protected to ensure that Territorians continue to have reliable access to basic necessities.

“I’m confident other jurisdictions will recognise the challenges we face in heavy vehicle transport across sparsely populated long distances.

“The ATC will also provide the opportunity to move forward on the National Road Safety Strategy.

“The Northern Territory Government is committed to making our roads safer and welcomes the opportunity to learn from the success of other states.”
