$150 MILLION PORT EXPANSION WORKS BEGIN

The first works on the $150 million East Arm Port expansion are underway with the transport of rock and earth fill to ready the new hardstand area for development.

Minister for Business, Dr Chris Burns said the port expansion will double capacity at the port to support increased transportation of bulk resources and other exports.

East Arm Port is critical infrastructure for increasing trade, business and economic development opportunities and the Territory Government will invest $100 million in the expansion,” Dr Burns said.

“The first project will upgrade and seal a reclaimed area at the wharf to provide additional hardstand area, increasing storage capacity at the port.

“Around 220,000 cubic metres of fill will be placed at the 6.3 hectare site, with the first 32,000 cubic metres currently being transported.

“Local company, Sage Constructions have been awarded the tender for $643,000 to transport the first fill to the port and for civil works on site,” Dr Burns said.

The 6.3 hectare site is expected to be ready for sealing after 12 – 24 months following fill loading and settlement.

A further 300,000 cubic metres of fill will be used to reclaim Pond F at the port to provide more hardstand area under the port expansion.

Rock fill is being sourced and carted from other civil projects around Darwin for the port expansion.

The $150 million East Arm Port expansion projects include:

·        Overland conveyor from the bulk minerals storage to the bulk loader on the wharf

·        Reclamation of the land behind the bulk loading facility known as pond F

·        Upgrade and seal the eastern reclaimed area on the wharf to provide additional hardstand

·        Rail interchange
