Opportunities for Trade, Business and Investment

The Chief Minister Paul Henderson has highlighted the growing relationship between the Northern Territory and Japan in a meeting with the key Government agency responsible for energy security.

A meeting with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in the new Government of Yukio Hatoyama is highly sought after by world leaders – the US President Barack Obama will not meet with the group until next week.

Mr Henderson held talks with METI’s Senior Vice Minister of Economy Trade and Industry Mr Tadahiro Matsushita in Tokyo today.

“There has been a historic change in Government in Japan – the first in 54 years – and it timely for me to introduce the Territory and the opportunities for trade and development that we can offer,” Mr Henderson said.

Japan is one of the Northern Territory’s key international markets and we want to build on the strong investment, business and trade links we share.

“Part of building a new relationship is to understand the new Government’s priorities in the energy and minerals sector and to identify how this fits in with the Territory Government’s plans to grow and broaden our economy.

“Mr Matsushita confirmed METI’s commitment to the INPEX project. He was also very interested in learning more about the 47 new resource investment opportunities with 20 companies looking for Japanese investment.

“At today’s meeting Mr Matsushita confirmed the Northern Territory is way ahead of the other states in Australia in terms of providing quality information on companies that are open for investment and quality information on the geology of the Territory.

“As a result of this trip to Japan, the NT Government will be holding an investment seminar in Japan next May for resource companies interested in the Northern Territory.

“I’m very confident that will lead to additional Japanese investment.”
