Top Tourism Operators Recognised at the 2009 Brolga Awards

The Territory’s tourism industry gathered at the National Road Transport Hall of Fame tonight in Alice Springs for the 2009 Brolga Awards.

Minister for Tourism, Dr Chris Burns, congratulated the winners and nominees for their outstanding work in the Territory tourism industry.

“Winning a Brolga is a prestigious accolade in the Territory and I congratulate the 28 winners from tonight’s awards,” Dr Burns said.

“It has been a challenging year for tourism operators across the nation due to the global economic downturn, and thanks to the hard work by the local industry and Tourism NT, the Territory has performed well.

“This year there has been a mix of veterans and emerging businesses amongst the winners which is great to see.

“Congratulations to Liz Martin OAM, who opened the National Road Transport Hall of Fame in 1992, for winning the Tourism Minister’s Perpetual Trophy.

“Liz has made a significant contribution of the Territory tourism industry for many years and now hosts an annual reunion at the Hall of Fame which attracts up to 800 transport industry magnates and truckies each year.

“The MacDonnell Range Holiday Park won the best Tourist and Caravan Park for an impressive 18th time since 1989.

Dr Burns also paid tribute to the Chairman of the judges for the past five years, Mr Bob Woodward, who has decided this will be his last time in the role.

“Bob is a tourism icon in his own right, and further contributed to the industry by chairing the Brolgas judging panel for five years – I thank him for his outstanding contribution,” he said.

“Congratulations to all the winners and nominees of the 2009 Brolga Awards.”

The winners of the Brolgas will be finalists in the 2009 Qantas tourism awards in February next year in Hobart.
