Territory Indigenous Artist represents Australian Women in Shanghai

Minister for Women’s Policy, Malarndirri McCarthy today congratulated Arnhem Land elder Gulumbu Yunupingu for being chosen to represent Australian women at an International Women’s Day function in Shanghai, China.

The function, which celebrates the achievements of women across the world, is being held today in the Australian Pavilion of the Shanghai World Expo in the lead up to the official opening of the World Expo on 1 May.

Gulumbu, a world-renowned Indigenous artist, is a previous winner of the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award and her art features in Paris’s $350 million Musee du Quai Branly.

Ms McCarthy said Gulumbu was a well-respected member of the Territory community and would represent all Australian women with pride and distinction.

“Gulumbu is a fantastic role model for Indigenous people and Australians in general,” Ms McCarthy said.

“Her involvement in the International Women’s Day event and the World Expo will highlight the level of talent and knowledge Australia’s Indigenous artists have to offer the world.”

Three of Gulumbu’s Larrakitj (memorial poles) are also being unveiled in Shanghai as part of the Northern Territory’s contribution to the art sculpture display in the Australian pavilion.

Today’s International Women’s Day event is an opportunity to showcase the valuable contributions Territory and Australian women make to our society and the rest of the world.
