Kon Vatskalis MINISTER FOR FISHERIES |
Territorians’ fishing snapshots will feature in a unique exhibition debuting in Darwin next month, Fisheries Minister Kon Vatskalis said today.
The exhibition to be held at the Museum and Art Gallery next month, and will feature 100 photographs submitted by anglers over the past two months.
Mr Vatskalis and Member for Fannie Bay Michael Gunner today inspected the photographs at the Museum, which will form part of the first of its kind fishing showcase called Gone Fishin’ … the reel Top End Story.
The exhibition showcases the origin of fishing in the Territory and explores the biology, diversity, and impact fishing has had on the lives of Territorians.
“Territorians love their fishing, there is no doubt about it, right back from the cultural history of fishing to our present day love of recreational fishing,” Mr Vatskalis said.
The exhibition will include objects that inform the historic, cultural and scientific fabric of fishing in the Top End.
The exhibition will feature representations of fish and fishing from the earliest rock paintings through to the contemporary visual arts.
Mr Gunner said that he was not surprised by the level and standard of the photos given the important contribution that fishing makes to our great territory lifestyle.
“It doesn’t matter whether you’re catching up with friends, at an official function, or just being out and about, that someone will tell you about how great their last fishing trip was. Some tall tales are best left as myth others demand a photo to back them up - this is a collection of true tales."
Mr Vatskalis said the NT Government was committed to improving the fishing experience for Territorians,
“More than $5.2 million in boat ramp improvements are occurring across Top End boat ramps at the moment, all designed to improve and enhance recreational fishing – and the chance of landing a big one - in the Territory,” Mr Vatskalis said.
The exhibition will be open at the museum from 17 March – 16 September 2012.
