International tennis action to be served up again in the Red Centre

Territorians will again see top class international tennis action later this year when the Australian Pro Tour tennis returns to Alice Springs.

The Australian Pro Tour is a series of international men’s and women’s tennis events held over several months in regional cities and towns all over Australia.

Chief Minister Adam Giles said the Tour was yet another example of Territorians getting access to first class sporting events in their own backyard.

“A tournament which forms part of this tour will be held in Alice Springs in September this year and the Northern Territory Government is delighted to again be a major supporter,” Mr Giles said.

“We are providing $15 000 to assist in staging the event and we’re keen to see as many locals as possible getting along to the tournament and supporting it. We are committed to making it simpler for Territorians to access great sporting events.

Australian Pro Tour events have been held in Alice Springs since 2009, giving local tennis fans an opportunity to see professional players battle it out on court.

“Staging the Pro Tour in Alice also provides local players the chance to compete as wildcard entries and local officiators the chance to perform those roles in a professional setting,” Mr Giles said

Minister for Sport and Recreation Gary Higgins welcomed the return of the event to Alice Springs, which will be another calendar highlight for Territory tennis fans following the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group quarterfinal tie between Australia and Kazakhstan in Darwin from July 17-19.

“The return of this event is another facet of a very impressive line-up of high calibre live sporting events Territorians will enjoy in 2015, bolstering our reputation as a destination for elite sport in both Central Australia and the Top End,” Minister Higgins said.

“There are also some fantastic community activities planned as part of the Tour tournament program, including opportunities for kids to get involved in coaching clinics and also to assist as ball kids.”

Further details of the Australian Pro Tour event in Alice Springs in September will be released in coming months.
