Chief Minister of the Northern Territory
Minister for Sport and Recreation
Territorians should mark Friday 8 May in their diaries with general public ticket sales opening for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group quarterfinal tie in Darwin.
Chief Minister Adam Giles said excitement has been building in the Top End over the tie which will be watched all over the world.
“This has been a huge coup for the Northern Territory and has a massive reach – Darwin will sparkle for the millions of viewers and I’m sure locals will embrace this first class sporting event,” Mr Giles said.
“As well as the on-sale dates, ticket package prices for the event have been released. For $149 an adult can watch Australia’s young guns of tennis take on Kazakhstan across three fantastic days of action.”
Sport and Recreation Minister Gary Higgins said preparations were well advanced for the quarterfinal tie.
“The grass is down and taking hold and the courts are looking good,” Minister Higgins said.
“By the time the quarterfinals are on in July, the courts will be at an international standard supported by world class facilities – it will be a terrific showcase to prove the Northern Territory can host international sporting events.”
Australian Davis Cup Captain Wally Masur said the boys were looking forward to the home tie in Darwin.
“I’m closely following the progress of the grass court and believe it’s starting to take shape. All the boys are excited at the prospect of representing their country again and we’re all keen to get up there and compete. To be able to play at home on grass in dry, hot conditions suits our players extremely well,” he said.
“The team will be fresh from playing at Wimbledon and looking to do all they can to cement Australia’s position on the world stage and secure a place in the semifinals.
“I hope all the local fans come out in their green and gold to support us in July,” Masur added.
The Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group quarterfinal tie will be held from 17-19 July at Marrara Sporting Complex between Australia and Kazakhstan.
