The sport of lawn bowls is on a roll in Central Australia with the Government investing $1.5 million for new facilities in Alice Springs.
“This is another fantastic win for the Alice Springs community and a much needed expansion for the sport in the Red Centre,” Chief Minister Adam Giles said.
“The proposed new greens have a spectacular backdrop and would enhance the capacity of Alice Springs to deliver regular, organised sporting competitions.”
Sport and Recreation Minister Gary Higgins said the new lawn bowls facility would open the sport up to the broader community.
“It would increase social patronage with a venue that would allow all interested community groups to have access to the sport,” he said.
“Located at the Alice Springs Golf Club, the project will include a synthetic green and storage for equipment.
“Lawn bowls is a sport that can be enjoyed equally by any member of the community regardless of age or physical ability and is not exclusive to elite levels of competition.”
Alice Springs Lawn Bowls Club Committee Member Paul Harding welcomed the announcement.
"This is great news and a wonderful investment in our sport. It will definitely help us attract more people to give bowls a try, and we might even recruit a few golfers,” he said.
"It will also be fantastic socially to combine the two sports, and a new facility will also help attract more functions."
Central Australian has been a big winner in Budget 2015.
"As well as all the wonderful sport and recreation projects there is $34.2 million to continue remediation and upgrades to Alice Springs Hospital, $25 million to complete the sealing of the Mereenie Inner Loop, $5.5 million for a new facility at Larapinta Primary School for integrated child and family services, $4.03 million for a new preschool on the Braitling Primary School site, $2.7 million to upgrade and redevelop the Alice Springs Youth Centre and much more,” the Chief Minister said.
