Minister for Sport and Recreation
The Northern Territory Government has announced a $50,000 grant to the Central Australian AFL team the Redtails for their Right Tracks program.
Making the announcement today at a lunch for the AFL Indigenous Round Premiership game in Alice Springs, Sport and Recreation Minister Gary Higgins said the Right Tracks program deserves the funding boost.
“We all know there are a number of young Indigenous men in the Alice Springs region which are disengaged with the community,” Mr Higgins said.
“Right Tracks is a program which engages these young men and offers a learning and supportive environment focussing on numeracy and literacy, health and wellbeing, job ready mentoring, work experience and life skills training, to name a few.
“The program uses football to attract and engage them. Belonging to the Redtails club, you must be in full time employment, study or in the Right Tracks Program. It’s a simple premise which is working.”
The Minister said the grant would go towards the program’s work around helping young Indigenous men qualify for and find employment.
“Congratulations to the Redtails and those involved with their Right Tracks Program – it’s the right way to go,” Mr Higgins said.
