Minister for Sport and Recreation
Sports Minister Gary Higgins has paid tribute to Australian athletics great Ron Clarke who passed away this morning aged 78.
Ron Clarke AO MBE was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame for his contribution to athletics.
He was a legendary distance runner with an international reputation and, from 1965 to 1972, held every world record from the two miles to the one hour run.
"Much has been said and written about Ron Clarke and no doubt much more will be done today,” Minister Higgins said.
“But his legacy of being not just a world class athlete but also someone who personified drive, focus and dedication to his sport will live on.
“He was the best but cruel fate meant he never won an Olympic or Commonwealth gold medal. But still he persisted and set an amazing 17 world records.
“In later years he became a successful businessman and Mayor of the Gold Coast.
“I can’t possibly list all his achievements but suffice to say this morning Australia lost one of our best sportsmen – rest in peace Ron Clarke.”
