A goal to attack – the nation’s best netballers meet in Darwin

The Territory Storm is playing host to the Australian Netball League’s second round this weekend, but they’ll leave the welcome festivities at the door as the Territory aims to give their opponents plenty of trouble on the scoreboard.

The Storm will take on the Western Sting, the Victorian Fury and the Canberra Darters in three days of elite netball competition at Marrara Indoor Stadium starting tomorrow night.

“Top End sports fans should make their way to Marrara Indoor Stadium this weekend to support these talented netballers and give them some rousing Territory support as they take on some of the country’s best players,” Sport and Recreation Minister Gary Higgins said.

“Led by captain Tahlia Lee from Alice Springs and vice-captain Rebecca Winch from Darwin, the Storm will do the Territory proud in this national developmental competition. The Government is very pleased to support the Storm with $50,000 annual funding to assist their participation in this competition, which will take the team to Perth and Hobart after the Darwin round.”

New Storm coach Gillian Lee is also head coach of netball with the Northern Territory Institute of Sport, and has an impressive netball resume which includes representing Australia as a junior player and assisting current Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander with Melbourne Phoenix in the former national league.

The team will benefit from mentoring by former Australian team netballer Joanne Morgan, who will take to the court as an import player. The gun goal shooter will share her international experience including playing in famed test matches against trans Tasman rival New Zealand during the 1990s and cementing herself as one of the most accurate and formidable shooters in the game.

“Joanne is a respected veteran of the sport who was once considered the most prolific goal shooter in Australian netball, and I believe our Territorian players will gain a lot from playing alongside her and learning from a legend of the sport,” Gillian Lee said.

“I’m confident the Storm will be competitive in this year’s ANL season and we are determined that no team will take us lightly.”
