The Territory Remembers – our extraordinary women

The Northern Territory Government is pleased to be able to honour the extraordinary women in the NT this International Women’s’ Day through The Territory Remembers.

The Territory Remembers (TTR) Program will next year commemorate the 75th anniversary of the first, and most destructive, air raids on Australia. The NT was on the frontline of these air attacks which started on 19 February, 1942.

This program has been developed to commemorate the significant anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin and to foster increased awareness of Darwin and the Northern Territory’s involvement in World War II.

To honour the remarkable Territory women of the time, a free screening of Australia will be shown as part of International Women's Day and The Territory Remembers program.

“The Territory Remembers offers an opportunity for us to remember the brave actions performed by women 74 years ago and to acknowledge the remarkable women in the Territory,” Arts and Museums Minister Gary Higgins said.

“Among these women in the 1940s were Sister Margaret Augusta De Mestre, a dedicated army nurse who was on the HMAS Manunda when it was hit by shrapnel and a bomb in Darwin Harbour. She continued to treat the wounded even in the chaos and sadly died of wounds herself.

“Her significant involvement and sacrifice during WWII is acknowledged by a commemorative chair at the Christ Church Cathedral, Darwin.

“The Territory Remembers will focus on these stories and others and will aim to increase awareness of the Northern Territory’s involvement in WWII.”

The free screening of Australia will be held on Thursday at 6.30pm at CMAX Palmerston.

The ticket includes one complimentary medium soft drink or a bottle of water and medium popcorn only. Maximum two tickets can be booked per person.

Entry is free and a gold coin donation is encouraged towards the Northern Territory RSL Welfare Services, Darwin.

The Northern Territory RSL Welfare Services, Darwin NT based organisation supporting the well-being and support of Australian Defence Force veterans, war widows, and their families through the provision of welfare officers working across the Northern Territory.
