Hatches Creek tender awarded to Alice Springs based company

The Northern Territory Government is continuing its Indigenous employment initiative and has awarded a tender to Alice Springs based firm Tangentyere Constructions to complete works at the Pioneer mine in Hatches Creek.

Mines and Energy Minister David Tollner said the Northern Territory Government remains committed to offering local jobs to local companies.

“Tangentyere Constructions is a Northern Territory owned and operated company with 21 employees, 10 of whom are Indigenous,” he said.

“This tender is to supply and install chain link boundary fence at the Pioneer Mine site at Hatches Creek, which is required to prevent unauthorised access to an area of subsidence caused by the collapse of underground workings and several open shafts.

“The company has committed to 75% employment of Indigenous workers from the Hatches Creek area to install the new fence.”

The tender will also cover undertaking safety works at several open mine shafts including backfilling of open shafts at Endurance mine and Crystal mine.

The Hatches Creek area is part of the Iytwelepenty/Davenport Range National Park and is an area of great historical and tourist interest.

“The works will make these areas safer for the nearby local communities and tourists visiting the National Park,” Mr Tollner said.

“The project is also part of a broader scope of works in the Tennant Creek area and is being completed by the Legacy Mines Unit under the Mining Remediation Fund.”

In 2013 changes to the Mining Management Act introduced an annual levy on mining securities, which enabled the establishment of the Mining Rehabilitation Fund and the Legacy Mines Unit.

“This is a proud initiative of the CLP Government and the fund is a levy on the environmental security bonds for mining activities which aims to address legacy mine liabilities,” Mr Tollner said.

“The Northern Territory Government remains committed to providing opportunities for regional development through local employment and involvement in remediation activities.”

The contract with Tangentyere Constructions is valued at $170,175.
