Federal funding helps next phase of Rum Jungle rehabilitation

The recent Federal Budget allocation of $10 million through an extension of the Project Agreement with the Northern Territory Government will allow the continued rehabilitation planning at the former Rum Jungle Uranium mine site.

Mines and Energy Minister David Tollner said through this Agreement the Department of Mines and Energy will continue to coordinate and administer the Rum Jungle rehabilitation planning project.

“These activities have been administered through National Partnership Agreements with the Australian Government since 2009 with the Australian Government providing significant funding to support the rehabilitation planning,” he said.

“This phase of the project represents significant economic and capacity building opportunities for local business and traditional Aboriginal owners in the Bachelor region.”

In addition to rehabilitation planning, the funding will also cover necessary repairs and maintenance to the existing cover system on the Waste Rock Dump at Rum Jungle Creek South.

Rum Jungle Creek South is a recreational reserve and continues to be a popular destination for tourists and locals for daytime picnics and recreational activities.

“The works will ensure the long term integrity of the cover system by placing clean, compacted material and repairing existing drainage structures that are beginning to erode,” Mr Tollner said.

At the completion of the next phase of the Rum Jungle rehabilitation planning project the preferred rehabilitation strategy for Rum Jungle Uranium Mine site will be implementation ready.

If funded this strategy will see the site rehabilitated utilising leading practice rehabilitation standards and will reflect the views and aspirations of stakeholders particularly the joint traditional Aboriginal owners of the site – Kungarakan and Warai.
