The Minister for Primary Industry and Resources, Ken Vowles, and Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim, remind pet owners to plan for the care of their pets during this cyclone season.
“Cyclone season kicks off today and we urge people to be prepared. It is predicted to be an active cyclone season and advance planning will help keep your family and animals safe,” said Minister Vowles.
“We urge pet owners to have a plan and prepare an emergency pet pack. In the same way that you have a cyclone kit for your family, ensure you plan for your pet’s needs as well.
“Your pet’s emergency pet pack should include; any medication/medical history and vet’s contact details, collar/harness/lead, litter tray and litter, food and water sufficient for three days, toys, blanket/bed and an up to date photo of your pet to allow for easier reunification.
“Ideally, animal owners should have a place to send their animals if they need to evacuate. Family or friends might be able to help, or you could get together with neighbours and create a plan for your area that includes a safe place for animals,” Minister Vowles said.
City of Darwin Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim is urging pet owners to ensure their pet’s registration and microchipping is up to date, in preparation of a cyclone.
“Storms and cyclones can be stressful for pets which may cause them to panic and escape from their home,” said Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim.
“Council plays an important role in animal management and ensuring your pet is registered and microchipped will help us to identify their rightful owners.
“Pets are your family members, so we want to ensure we are able to return them back to you.
“Microchipping your pet only costs $30 at the Pound so we encourage all pet owners to go get it done before the wet season storms set in,” said Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim.
Registration fees start at $25 for a de-sexed dog and $10 for a de-sexed cat.
