$10 Million NT Government Investment in Jobs

Chief Minister Michael Gunner today announced $10 million from Budget 2017 to establish a new Marine Services Hub in Darwin Harbour, underpinning the proposed $100 million Ship Lift facility which has the potential to create hundreds of construction and ongoing jobs.

The $10 million comprises a $5 million investment by the Territory’s Land Development Corporation (LDC) to service land adjacent to the proposed Ship Lift for marine-related businesses to set up shop, and $5 million in collaboration with Pearl Marine Engineering (PME) to progress the project through due diligence.

PME was selected last year as the preferred proponent to enter a negotiation phase for the development of the Darwin Ship Lift Facility last year.

The proposed Ship Lift Facility will enable the maintenance and servicing of Defence and Australian Border Force vessels, as well as commercial and private vessels, including from the oil, gas and marine industries.

“Budget 2017 will create and support jobs and the Marine Services Hub will play a key role in increasing our capacity to grow defence presence and create new business opportunities for Territorians,” Mr Gunner said.

“Darwin Harbour’s strategic size and strategic location will form a big part of the Northern Territory’s economic future and we are spending money to unlock its full job creating potential

“The harbour is already home to the Darwin LNG project, the Ichthys LNG Project and the Darwin Port, which services our defence and live export industries – it’s a working harbour with huge future potential”

Servicing the land adjacent to the proposed Ship Lift will include:

“The proposed Ship Lift facility will drive local industry, create local jobs and consolidate Darwin’s role as a prime location for marine maintenance and servicing facilities,” Mr Gunner said.

“We need to create new industries that will be ongoing and help our economy avoid the boom and bust cycles that has been going on for years.”
