Drug Treatment options on Agenda

Assistant Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Jeff Collins will this week fly to Portugal to attend several meetings with legal and health professionals, as well as examine the operations of drug treatment facilities that are run there.

In Lisbon, Mr Collins will meet with the Chair and member of the Health Committee of the Portuguese Parliament, Jose Matos Rose, and other members of the Health Committee to discuss the implementation of the Portuguese Drug Strategy in 2001 and its operation since.

He will also observe the operation of associated treatment facilities and the local committees established to provide support and education for drug-users, and to see what can be adapted to alcohol as well.

Mr Collins will also meet with eminent extreme bushfire researcher Professor Domingos Veigas at the University of Coimbra.

Prof Veigas is a world leading researcher into extreme bushfire behaviour and also runs a group which provides training for many of the rural firefighters and undertakes many fire investigations especially relating to Firefighter fatalities.
