INVESTING IN TERRITORY CHILDREN

The Territory Labor Government is urging all young Top End and Central Australian people to help improve youth services in the Territory by taking part in a key new survey.

The Minister for Health Natasha Fyles said the CLP cut funding for education and other youth services, but the Territory Labor government is committed to changing that.

“We know that investing in children is the smart thing to do and the right thing to do. We promised Territorians that we would develop a Child and Adolescent Health Plan and we are delivering,” Ms Fyles said.

“Territorians enjoy a unique and vibrant lifestyle with many young people involved in competitive sports and volunteer work. Young people are an important part of our community but many are falling through the gaps.”

Minister Fyles said young Territorians are overrepresented in the justice system, mental health services and homeless statistics.

“Territorians aged 15 to 24 make up just 15% of the population, but they represent just under a quarter of all admissions to mental health inpatient facilities,” she said.

“Between 2007 and 2016 27% of NT road transport fatalities were under 25 years old.”

Minister Fyles said the government will listen to young people before taking action.

“We are asking all 15-24 years olds to complete an on-line survey to make sure we include their voices in the development of the NT Government’s child and adolescent health and wellbeing strategic plan,” Ms Fyles said.

“This survey will help to inform the work currently underway to develop a Child and Adolescent Health Plan.

“The plan will boost the services available to young people and create an integrated approach across relevant government sectors, including health, housing and education.”

Whether still in school, or studying, or employed, or spending their time in other ways, young people’s views are important.
