Chief Minister of the Northern Territory
Chief Minister Michael Gunner has congratulated Humpty Doo Barramundi on achieving globally-recognised certification – reaffirming to the world that the Territory’s seafood is not only top quality but of the highest environmental standard.
Humpty Doo Barramundi has become the first aquaculture facility in the Territory to achieve Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification, rewarding socially responsible and environmentally sustainable aquaculture.
“Territorians have always known we produce the best barra in the world, but now we know it’s produced with a globally-recognised, highest standard of environmental and social responsibility certification,” Mr Gunner said.
“Humpty Doo Farm produced around 1700 tonnes of premium saltwater barramundi in 2015-16 – and is a home grown business providing around 40 local jobs.
“Aquaculture is identified as one of the Territory’s key economic growth areas, especially in remote communities, so this global certification will only help in any future expansion of the HDB and benefits to the regional economy.
Mr Gunner said aquaculture facilities apply to receive BAP certification and undergo a rigorous, third party audit assessment before the certification can be awarded.
“The certification is a further reflection of the commitment HDB continues to show to sustainability, and environmental and social responsibility,” Mr Gunner said.
Northern Territory Seafood Council Chief Executive Officer, Katherine Winchester praised Humpty Doo Barramundi for reaching the significant milestone.
“Not only is Humpty Doo Barramundi the largest farmed barramundi operation in Australia, it is also now globally recognised for its sustainable practices and holistic approach to producing some of the tastiest and high quality farmed barramundi in the world,” Ms Winchester said.
“The passion and dedication that Dan Richards and the team at Humpty Doo Barramundi is second to none and taking the time to dedicate resources to achieve third party accreditation is a testament to their core values of producing farmed barramundi sustainably.”
