Minister for Housing and Community Development
The Territory Labor Government is providing $4 million in Special Purpose Grants (SPG) to assist governing bodies with essential infrastructure and delivery of services in regional communities.
Minister for Local Government, Gerry McCarthy, said that the Territory Labor Government is working in partnership with councils to provide opportunities to become stronger and self-sustaining.
“When regional communities are stronger, the entire Northern Territory is stronger,” Mr McCarthy said.
“These grants have a particular focus on improving local communities and what locals want – a core principle of this Territory Labor Government.”
Previous approved grants include:
upgrades for parks, sporting and recreational areas;
staff housing on remote communities and general infrastructure renovations or upgrades;
purchase of plant and equipment that will improve local government service delivery;
assistance with infrastructure projects;
assist with addressing issues around anti-social behaviour and discourage acts of vandalism and graffiti in council park lands and open spaces; and
animal management assistance to councils in remote areas
“Improving community amenities and services is a focus of this Government, and I encourage councils across the Territory put forward initiatives or projects that will benefit their community,” Mr McCarthy said.
Applications must be received by 8 December 2017, and a second round will open in March 2018.
