Catching Success: Humpty Doo Barramundi Celebrates Further Expansion

Territory success story Humpty Doo Barramundi (HDB) is celebrating the commissioning of a new set of ponds to complete its expansion, after demand for its saltwater barra has continued to climb.

The Territory Labor Government’s Memorandum of Cooperation with the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has already seen the local business dip a toe in the export market by sending fresh barra to be tested by sashimi chefs in Singapore and Tokyo. HDB is hoping this latest expansion will allow it to engage even more with overseas markets.

Minister for Primary Industry and Resources Ken Vowles said the new ponds installed at the family-owned business will increase production capacity over the next 12 months by 50 per cent to 3500 tonnes, meaning more jobs for Territorians – and more product to satisfy demand.

“This is a truly magnificent achievement by the Humpty Doo Barramundi team that reflects the can-do attitude of so many Territory businesses,” Mr Vowles said.

“The company employs more than 40 Territorians and works with 60 other local businesses. This completed expansion will see these figures grow.”

Humpty Doo Barramundi CEO Nick Preston said the nine new ponds were completed this month.

“They’ve already been stocked with beautiful Territory saltwater barramundi,” he said. “At present, 100 per cent of our product goes to the domestic market, but with this expansion we are looking to grow export market opportunities.”

Mr Vowles said he was delighted his department had been able to help HDB secure the land for the expansion, and continues to work with them to develop new markets, including through the Memorandum of Cooperation with MAFF.

“The Memorandum is opening doors for Territory businesses such as this, who have the go-getter attitude,” Mr Vowles said. “HDB has further expansion plans which could see production rise to 10,000 tonnes a year, with 100 people employed locally. With figures like this, Territory barra could soon be served up overseas, helping put NT aquaculture on the world map.”
