The old Cavenagh House building will be demolished and replaced by a striking ‘green’ nine-storey office tower, which will create 250 construction jobs and will become the new administrative headquarters for the Department of Health, Chief Minister Michael Gunner announced today.
The proposal features substantial CBD activation measures that will deliver broader benefits to the community and contribute to revitalising the Darwin CBD including:
Mr Gunner said the project was one part of a broader job-creating proposal following a public tender for 10,000 square metres of office accommodation in the CBD for a long-term Government lease.
“This is an exciting development that will deliver 250 jobs for locals during construction, provide a cool, green facelift to the CBD and deliver a centralised, long-term workplace for many of Health’s corporate services staff,” Mr Gunner said.
“The project will see the old Cavenagh House building, on the corner of Cavenagh and Knuckey streets, demolished and replaced with a modern, nine-storey office tower. It will change this part of the city. 660 government staff will then be based there.
“The architecture will be suited to Darwin’s tropical environment, featuring an internal atrium, high energy efficiency with a minimum 5-Star rating, a rooftop garden and shading and greening at street level which will help reduce heat loads in this part of the CBD.
“We went to the market and asked for 10,000 square metres of office space, construction jobs and CBD activation and this proposal delivers in spades.
“The new building, along with the other activation measures offered by Sandran, will refresh and breathe life into an underused part of the CBD, creating a Cavenagh Street/Litchfield Street precinct.”
The planned developments will complement the Government’s efforts to reduce heat in Cavenagh Street and encourage locals and visitors to the area.
Sandran Pty Ltd has been selected as the preferred tenderer after an extensive assessment process, including input from a number of subject matter experts and oversight by an independent probity advisor.
Sandran will pay for the construction of the project, while the government will pay for lease once constructed. Sandran has also committed to using 95% local contractors and suppliers on the projects and both the car park and childcare centre will be locally managed and operated.
Work on the project will get underway early in 2018 with construction expected to be completed by 2021.
