Minister for Housing and Community Development
Since last year, 155 additional living spaces have been completed or are underway in remote Territory communities as part of our Room to Breathe program.
Now, after extensive planning the Territory Labor Government is ready to build their first complete remote home.
Minister for Housing and Community Development, Gerry McCarthy said the first tender under the NT Labor Government’s HomeBuild NT program has been released.
“The Territory Labor Government is strengthening remote communities by delivering local jobs and better housing for people in the bush,” he said.
“The HomeBuild NT program is a component of our record 10-year $1.1 billion investment into remote housing.
“The program will see the construction of new houses in remote communities with the first tender recently released for the community of Gunbalanya.
“This tender will see the construction of four, three bedroom dwellings, which will go directly to families in desperate need.
“This is so important for remote Territorians who have been impacted by housing shortages and overcrowding for many years.
“We know the importance of a good home and the positive impact it has on a good education, good health and good community outcomes.
“Not only will HomeBuild NT deliver infrastructure for people in desperate need, but it will boost indigenous employment and provide opportunities for locals to develop skills in construction. Local jobs for local people.
“Local decision making is a priority of this program with community consultations recently taking place throughout a number of communities.
“Consultations with other communities are underway with more tenders to be released in the near future.”
Member for Arafura Lawrence Costa said this construction will greatly benefit the lives of families in his electorate.
“It is exciting to hear that Gunbalanya will be the first community to receive HomeBuild NT Houses,” he said.
“These new homes will be a welcomed addition to help combat overcrowding seen throughout the community.”
Tenders for construction in Gunbalanya close 1 February 2018.
