Restoring Trust and Investing in Generational Change: School Budgets Online

The Territory Labor Government will publish all 2018 government school budgets online from today, fulfilling an important promise to make funding to NT schools more transparent.

Education Minister Eva Lawler said a record $1.14 billion had been invested in education as part of Budget 2018 and the publication of school budgets online enabled all Territorians to see the funding distributed to their schools.

“The Territory Labor Government is putting children at the centre of our decisions and delivering a fairer and more transparent funding model for our schools,” Ms Lawler said.

“We are reinvesting in schools to create generational change and brighter futures for all Territorians after the CLP ripped $135 million out of education and sacked teachers and educational support staff.

“In response to last year’s independent review by Ernst and Young into school funding, we promised to publish budgets online so that we are transparent and accountable.”

Budget 2018 provides $506 million in direct funding to government schools through the School Resourcing Model. This model enables school councils to direct funding where they need it most.

“Schools have the flexibility and support to use their funding to deliver educational programs and services that best meet the needs of their students and the school community,” Ms Lawler said.

“The funding will support schools to deliver a quality education, so every child has the opportunity to engage in learning, grow and achieve their full potential.

“We are reinvesting in education because we know it matters. Teachers know it matters, parents know it matters and most importantly, kids know it matters.”

The $506 million in direct funding to schools is in addition to government investment in school infrastructure, curriculum and other school support initiatives.

Budget 2018 also included round two of funding for the Building Better Schools initiative, which will see every Territory school receive $300,000 for infrastructure upgrades during this term of government.
