Generational Change: New $6.3 million Early Childhood Centre for Tennant Creek kids

Construction is soon to begin on a dedicated, $6.3 million early childhood centre in Tennant Creek, which will offer unprecedented support to the Barkly region’s youngest community members.

Local builder ProBuild NT has been awarded the tender for the Tennant Creek Early Childhood Integrated Learning Centre, which will combine a Child and Family Centre, a Families as First Teachers site and a pre-school, enabling continuous support and education for children in critical early years.

“All families deserve access to high quality education and care services no matter where they live and the Territory Labor Government is working to ensure that every child gets the best possible start in life,” Education Minister Eva Lawler said.

“This precinct will ensure families have access to a seamless education pathway from the birth of their child, through infancy to preschool, setting them up for success at school and into adulthood.”

The major construction project will also provide a significant injection into the Tennant Creek economy, supporting more than 40 jobs, including 13 positions held by Aboriginal employees.

Mick Betteridge, General Manager of ProBuild NT, said his company was thrilled to win the tender, amid tough economic conditions being felt across the Territory.

“The award of this project provides an opportunity for not only us, but contributes greatly to the local economy and provides further opportunities with employment, training and development of the local businesses and residents,” he said.

Member for Barkly Gerry McCarthy said extensive consultation with the local community was undertaken to determine how the centre would best complement the work of the local school.

“This vital education infrastructure underpins the Labor Government’s generational change policy, which begins with comprehensive early childhood growth and development,” he said.

“The new Early Childhood Integrated Learning Centre significantly aids the delivery of the Tennant Creek Primary School curriculum, offering an early childhood hub for local programs, stakeholders and Aboriginal organisations, to grow our children strong together.”

Construction is expected to commence in the coming weeks and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2018.
