Territory toddlers now eligible for $200 worth of swimming lessons

Territory toddlers are now eligible to claim $200 worth of swimming lessons a year with the Northern Territory Government’s new Learn to Swim Vouchers.

Under the new scheme, which kicked off this week, parents can now apply for a $100 voucher twice a year to be used for learn to swim classes for children under five not yet enrolled in pre-school or school.

To be eligible for the voucher, toddlers must first complete the Under 5 Water Safety Awareness Program (WASP), which is administered by Royal Life Saving Society NT Branch.

“Our new Learn to Swim Vouchers are a part of our $5 million expansion of the successful Sports Voucher scheme,” said Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing Matt Conlan.

“Learning to Swim is a vital life lesson and our new Learn to Swim Vouchers provide parents with more opportunity to ensure their children learn this important lifelong skill, no matter their age.

“The Vouchers will ease the financial burden on families and ensure all Territory toddlers can learn to swim, which will ultimately help prevent tragic drownings in the Northern Territory.”

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children aged under five and according to the Royal Life Saving Society, between 2002 and 2013, 359 children under five drowned in Australia.

“Teaching children water awareness is recognised as one of the main ways to prevent drowning, in conjunction with supervision,” said Mr Conlan.

“Through our new Learn to Swim Vouchers, the Northern Territory is leading the way in drowning prevention. The new Vouchers will help keep Territory toddlers safe and in an activity that is great fun too.”

Parents whose child has completed the WASP program can now apply for their first $100 Learn to Swim Voucher at:

The vouchers can be redeemed at swim schools throughout the Territory currently registered with AUSTSWIM Australia or Swim Australia. For further information on the Learn to Swim Vouchers call 1800 817 860.

When a child turns five or enrols in pre-school or school, they become eligible for the Sports Voucher scheme which includes $200 worth of Vouchers a year that can also be spent on swimming lessons or other sport, recreation and cultural activities.

The new Sports Vouchers will be distributed through schools at the beginning of Semester Two.
