NT moves ahead with first Mental Health Strategic Plan

Office of the Chief Minister

Minister for Health Robyn Lambley has announced that the Northern Territory’s first ever Mental Health Strategic Plan will soon be completed after successful consultation with stakeholders, consumers and carers.

“Today marks the start of Mental Health Week and I would like to thank everyone who participated in the first round of consultation for the NT Mental Health Strategic Plan,” Mrs Lambley said.

“Stakeholders, consumers and carers have been able to share their experience of mental health care in the NT and how they want services to look like in the future.

“The NT Mental Health Strategic Plan, which is still open for public consultation until October 17, will guide the Territory towards improved services and resources over the next six years.

“Supporting mental health services and improving outcomes is a key priority for the Northern Territory Government, as we recognise that poor mental health affects not only the individual, but also their family and the wider community.

“The NT Mental Health Strategic Plan will focus on supporting Territory Government and Non-Government sectors to provide greater access to a mix of services, including supported accommodation, counselling and youth services across the NT.

“One in five Australians may experience mental illness this year, and almost half of us in our lifetime are likely to require assistance for a mental illness.”

Mrs Lambley said Mental Health Week 2014 raises community awareness about mental health issues, with World Mental Health Day to be celebrated on Friday.

“Last month the NT Suicide Prevention and Strategic Action Plan was also opened for public feedback.

“The feedback to date has been overwhelmingly positive and I thank all who have helped to shape this Action Plan as well.

“Here in the Territory, suicide remains a major concern. This plan aims to reduce rates of suicide and self-harm and improve mental health and wellbeing for individuals and communities.

“There are many events planned during Mental Health Week that promote social and emotional wellbeing to the community and I encourage everyone to get involved, as good mental health is something we all need to be mindful of.”

Events being held for Mental Health Week include an Odd Socks Day at Araluen Christian College; fishing, dancing and singing at Nauiyu Health Centre; Stress Less day in the Park at Alice Springs and a range of celebrations in Darwin, Katherine and Palmerston.
