Save water and money with new Water Smart initiative

Office of the Chief Minister

The Northern Territory Government is helping to ease the cost of living for Darwin residents, with a new free water smart initiative.

Minister for Essential Services Willem Westra van Holthe said Living Water Smart’s latest initiative provided Darwin home and business owners with free three-star water efficient showerheads through its SWAPIT Campaign.

“Water efficient showerheads can make a huge difference to water consumption, saving thousands of litres annually,” Mr Westra van Holthe said.

“This easy to implement initiative will help residents save money on their water bill, as well as help stop water wastage.

“I encourage all Darwin residents to take advantage of this initiative and swap their showerheads free of charge.

“Inefficient, water greedy showerheads use up to 20 litres of water per minute; whereas the free three–star rated showerheads use no more than nine litres per minute.

“Using less water protects our precious natural resources while also saving money for customers and I hope everyone can take part in swapping their old for new.

“Being water efficient is really just common sense,” Mr Westra van Holthe said.

Mr Westra van Holthe congratulated the Power and Water Corporation and its Living Water Smart team for the practical initiative, helping Darwin households and businesses to save water and money.

To take part in SWAPIT, home and business owners in the Darwin region who are connected to Power and Water Corporation’s water supply need to bring their inefficient showerhead and their water bill to one of the swap stations in Darwin’s Mitchell Centre, Casuarina Square or Palmerston Shopping Centre.

The campaign will run all week. For further information about the Living Water Smart program, rebates on water saving appliances, or the SWAPIT, go to www.livingwatersmart.com.au/swapit
