Construction of the Territory Labor Government’s innovative $2.7 million Cavenagh Shade Structure is now complete.
This major revitalisation project has supported over 60 jobs during construction including 12 indigenous employees.
Vines for the 55 metre shade structure have now been planted in the centre median planter boxes and include two types of vines – the Rangoon Creeper vine and Orange Trumpet vine. These plant species are expected to grow to full size in 12 to 18 months.
The project is part of Government’s plan to revitalise Darwin’s CBD through transformative projects that will position Darwin as a cool, tropical, world-renowned destination, attract more people and create jobs.
In partnership with the City of Darwin, Government is delivering:
· Shade structures, new trees and a green wall as part of upgrades to the Bennett and Smith Street intersections (this work is currently out to tender)
· Greening the street – planter boxes for medium scale trees and garden walls for instant greenery
· Cool surface treatments – next year new technology paints to reflect UV, and alternate road mix and pavement products along Cavenagh Street will commence.
· Environmental monitoring – with heat sensors installed, themed lighting and planting work to continue into early November with minimal impacts to traffic and surrounding businesses.
