The Territory Government is continuing its plan to revitalise Darwin’s CBD by inviting designs for the Civic and State Square Precinct while also awarding the tender for Stage 2 of the Cavenagh Street redevelopment.

The transformative projects form part of the Government’s strategy to rejuvenate Darwin’s CBD making it a cooler and more public-friendly place. This will build Darwin’s reputation as a tropical, world-renowned destination, attracting new residents and creating jobs.

Construction of Stage 1 of the Cavenagh Street project — a 55-metre cool shade structure worth $2.7 million — has been completed, with minor items such as theme lighting and misting systems currently being installed.

PTM Group has been awarded the $1.37 million tender for Stage 2 of the Cavenagh Street project, with the development to include the planting of 29 new trees and heat reflective road surface treatments to reduce pavement surface temperatures.

The Cavenagh Street developments go hand-in-hand with the redevelopment of the Civic and State Square Precinct, which will feature a cool oasis-like space in the CBD to act as a social and recreational destination for locals and visitors.

The Government is inviting tenders to submit designs for the Civic and State Square Masterplan, which will include the site above a new 450-space underground car park. Construction for the $19.4 million carpark began in August and has an estimated completion date of late 2019.
