The Territory Labor Government is protecting the Northern Territory’s unique environment, with the latest round of Environment Grants now open for applicants.

This year’s program will focus on waste and is designed to engage the community to help mitigate environmental harm and raise awareness of the impacts to protect the Territory’s environment.

More than $900,000 has been allocated as part of the 2019/20 Environment Grants round to support remote and regional areas to protect their environment:

• $630,000 has been allocated for environmental groups to assist the Government in the development of environmental policy and regulation, community education and awareness on waste and strategic waste management in rural and remote areas; and
• $300,000 has been allocated for community, schools, small business and not-for-profit organisation projects with a focus on waste avoidance, reuse and recycling, and increasing accessibility to the container deposit scheme in regional and remote areas.

The 2018/19 Environment Grants saw:

• Jingili Primary School receive more than $3,000 to construct and secure a collection point to improve their recycling outcomes and more than $2,000 to purchase Bees Wax Wraps to reduce its use of single-use plastics;
• Milingimbi Outstation Progress and Resource Association receive more than $19,000 for water efficiency upgrades at Bodiya Outstation; and
• Belyuen Community Government Council receive more than $3,000 for their Clean Up Days.
