Palmerston is the Territory’s fastest-growing city and to support this thriving community, the Territory Labor Government is working with the City of Palmerston to revitalise the family capital of the Northern Territory.
The NT Government is investing $4.95 million into Palmerston to create jobs, improve the lifestyle of local residents and attract more people to the area.
The grant projects include:
Connected Pathways – Walking and biking are part of daily travel and is a cornerstone for the quality of life in Palmerston. Stage 1 of this project will provide a highly interconnected path network in various areas of Palmerston for all ages and abilities to increase access, safety and convenience for the community.
School Zone Road Safety Improvements – The Council, in partnership with the Northern Territory Government has recently installed permanent electronic speed limit signs at nine different school zones. The signs have been proven effective in creating safer school zones and more signs will be rolled out to schools in Palmerston, including Zuccoli Primary School.
Greening and Cooling the City – A significant tree-planting program across the city and landscaping works to the southern end of Temple Terrace has been identified to improve the environment, attractiveness and liveability for the community.
Community Safety – Over 170 laneways provide connectivity for the community and a number of these narrow laneways have been identified as anti-social hotspots. New treatments including new lighting will be implemented to increase safety across the city.
Palmerston Library Upgrades – The library services Palmerston and the regional area, with more than 150,000 people visiting each year. A review of the design and needs will be undertaken, and a plan for renewal and refurbishment to ensure the Library continues to meet the needs of the growing community.
Mitchell Creek and Escarpment Feasibility and Operations Study – An opportunity has been identified to further protect and maintain this valuable ecosystem whilst exploring opportunities to boost tourism and community infrastructure through engagement with groups like the Larrakia people, friends of Mitchell Creek and the community.
Palmerston Aquatic Centre Upgrades – Part of the Pr6ject initiatives this project will deliver a renewed facility to cater for the growing needs of the community and a “Family City”.
Community Safety Public Lighting - Various public spaces have been identified as poorly lit resulting in potential community safety issues. These include roads and public spaces. A staged program has been developed to improve lighting in these areas over a number of years.
Palmerston Smart City Program - The NT Government in partnership with the Australian Federal Government and Council will be delivering smart city technology initiatives in Palmerston designed to improve liveability, deliver efficiencies and contribute to a more sustainable community.
The Territory Labor Government today also released a discussion paper on an area plan for Central Palmerston. This will provide a roadmap for land use and development, and accommodate future residential and commercial growth in the area.
