Creating Jobs and Safer Communities: New 24 Hour Police Station at John Stokes

Office of the Chief Minister

A tender for the design and construction of a new 24-hour police station in Nightcliff as part of the John Stokes Redevelopment was released earlier this week.

The Police Station forms a critical part of the wider redevelopment, which will provide a central community hub, improving the lifestyle and reinvigorating the area.

The demolition of John Stokes, is currently underway with local contractor NTEX awarded the $1.1 million contract to make way for construction to begin – which will see more than 250 local jobs over the lifetime of the project.

The new 24-hour police station will include:

  • A 24-hour front counter
  • Community space
  • Muster rooms to cater for General-Duties officers and Alcohol Policing Unit members
  • Interview rooms
  • A secure car park
  • Outside respite area for Police
  • Break-out spaces

The John Stokes Redevelopment also includes the construction of specifically designed public housing, including for seniors and people living with disabilities, along with a pedestrian friendly link between Nightcliff Village and Nightcliff Shopping Centre. It will also include the expansion of local services and open space for the community to enjoy.

Construction of the new Police Station will commence late 2019, with completion anticipated for late 2020.

Quotes from the Member for Nightcliff, Natasha Fyles:

“All Territorians deserve to feel safe and they want their homes and businesses to be safe as well. That’s why we are delivering a new 24-hour Police Station, which will give Nightcliff residents the peace of mind they deserve.

“We are revitalising the area, not just creating 250 local jobs, we are creating one central community hub, bringing residents together – improving the lifestyle and reinvigorating the space for all of the community to enjoy.”
