New Alice Springs Street Art Project to Boost Local Jobs

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government has partnered with Red Hot Arts Central Australia to deliver a new Alice Springs Street Art Project.

Blank facades of buildings and roller shutter doors will be transformed into art canvasses as part of the new street art project that will breathe life into the Alice Springs CBD.

The project will create up to 20 local jobs for artists and works will commence on the first blank canvasses in the coming months. At least 20 building facades in the Alice Springs CBD will be painted by 31 July 2020.

This street art project is in addition to the Alice Springs Street Art Festival which will commence in June 2020.

The new collection of street art is part the Territory Labor Government’s $20 million Revitalising Alice initiative to reinvigorate and create a safer and more attractive Alice Springs for locals and visitors to enjoy.

The street art project was one of the initiatives identified through the Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) audit. The audit recommended including art work in public spaces and using surfaces such as blank walls and roller doors as canvasses, to make public spaces more welcoming.

Quotes from Member for Braitling, Dale Wakefield

“The Territory Labor Government is investing in Alice Springs and in projects that will attract visitors to our CBD, which creates jobs and boosts the local economy.

“Our vision is for a cool, safer, and more modern Alice Springs – the Inland Capital of Australia.

“The artwork will reflect the community and spirit of Central Australia and be painted by local artists. Alice Springs has a national and international reputation as a place where art is born and thrives, and we will be reflecting that in our CBD.”
