In February this year the Minister for Environment declared a ban on Seabed Mining in the Northern Territory.

The Territory Government knows our natural environment is one of our best assets and a huge part of what makes living in the Territory so special.

We also know that a healthy environment creates a stronger economy and more local jobs – good environmental policy is smart economic policy.

The proposed prohibition in the draft declaration applies to all mining related activities, in NT coastal waters, including intertidal waters.

Under legislation the Minister for Environment is required to consult with the Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority and the public in relation to the draft prohibition declaration, in accordance with the process outlined in the Environment Protection Regulations 2020.

Consultation will run from today (10 May) to 21 June 2021. Subject to the comments received during the consultation process, the declaration process is expected be completed in August 2021 with the permanent ban coming into legal effect soon after.
