Artists head into Territory schools

Office of the Chief Minister

Artists, dancers and musicians are helping students to set their creative sides free as the Artists in Schools program rolls out across the Territory this Semester.

The Territory Labor Government has invested $90,000 in the grant program towards building creative relationships between schools and the local arts and culture sector in the NT.

This year, 15 schools are participating in the initiative that allows students to learn skills and practices from local artists.

Artists in Schools encourages school partnerships within the wider community and practical involvement with visual and performing arts. It also enriches school art programs.

Projects this year include the creation of a street art history walk and a beat program to teach literacy through song writing, as well as printmaking, weaving, and performing arts.

The Artists in Schools grant program is a shared initiative between the Department of Education and Territory Families, Housing and Communities facilitated through Arts NT.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education Lauren Moss:

“The Artists in School program establishes connections and collaborations between our schools and local artists, and provides our students with the opportunities they need to realise their creative potential.

“The Territory Labor Government’s $90,000 investment in the Artists in Schools program this year will deliver a range of creative projects, providing innovative learning opportunities for our students.

“We have so many gifted, creative students in the Territory so programs like this create fantastic opportunities for schools to celebrate and foster this talent.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Chansey Paech:

“Artists have been working in Territory schools since the early 1990s so this program is an oldie but a goodie.

“Our Government knows that art matters and that creative expression provides a broad range of benefits, especially amongst our young people. That’s why we continue to support Artists in Schools.

“This year’s contingent of artists is set to inspire and mentor students right across the Territory and I’m looking forward to seeing the fruits of their labour.”
