Improving Road Safety in Palmerston

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government is continuing to improve road safety through infrastructure upgrades.

Budget 2021 has over $220 million allocated towards road safety measures across the Territory, and the NT Government is now seeking public comment to deliver safety upgrades to the Chung Wah Terrace and Emery Avenue intersection.

There has been a number of traffic incidents and injuries at this intersection. Traffic crash data highlighted right hand turns at this intersection from Emery Avenue as a contributing factor in the majority of crashes.

The Department conducted an engineering analysis, which recommends a roundabout as the best solution to improve road safety within this intersection, while maintaining traffic flow.

The project seeks to understand the community’s view and support for the proposed works. Stakeholders including Palmerston residents, businesses and motorists, pedestrians and cyclists who use the Emery Avenue and Chung Wah Terrace intersection are invited to provide their feedback about this proposal.

The Government is improving the road network for Territorians. Other recently completed road infrastructure projects delivered in Palmerston include:

  • Improving the access to Marlow Lagoon recreational area at Elrundie Avenue;
  • Upgrading the intersection of Driver Avenue and Elrundie Avenue; and
  • Upgrading the road geometry and traffic signal operations at the intersection of Tulagi Road and Stuart Highway.

Feedback on the proposed works is open four weeks from Monday 30 August 2021.

Quotes attributed to the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, and Member for Drysdale, Eva Lawler:

“We are doing everything we can to raise awareness of road safety in the Territory and it’s important to remember that every person whose life is taken or impacted by road trauma belongs to a family, a community, a school group, a sporting group.

“An analysis of traffic movements at the intersection highlights very concerning and poor driver behaviour. This poor decision-making has resulted in vehicle crashes and we want to see this reduced to zero.

“We support the engineering assessment which proposes a roundabout at this intersection to reduce the risks of crashes, and we’re now seeking the community’s view and support.

“This Government continues to invest in road safety measures. Over $220 million is allocated in this year’s budget to provide safer and efficient roads for Territorians.”
