Darwin Living Water Smart – rebates program launched

Office of the Chief Minister

Residents of Darwin use more water than any other resident in any major Australian city. In fact, Darwin residents use more water per person than Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide combined.

This comes at a great expense to our water reserves and the hip pocket of Territorians.

Today the Minister for Essential Services, Willem Westra van Holthe, launched the Living Water Smart Program’s Residential Assessment and Rebate Program.

The Living Water Smart Program is a free residential consultation program and rebate scheme focused on helping Territorians become smarter with water use. The program is being run by the Power and Water Corporation in conjunction with the Northern Territory Government.

Mr Westra van Holthe said the program will be offering free residential and commercial water consultations coupled with water saving rebates.

“Our aim for the Living Water Smart Program is to save 10,000 million litres of water – that’s equivalent to 4,500 Parap pools,” Mr Westra van Holthe said.

“Rebates are available for a host of domestic items, such as pool covers, dish washers, washing machines, shower heads and garden irrigation equipment.”

“We are also offering audits, consultations and have a host of educational tools available online to help people in Darwin to curb their water usage.

“The Living Water Smart program is designed to help us all reduce water consumption without altering our great Territory lifestyle.

“The Northern Territory Government is working hard to build northern Australia and place Darwin at the centre of that growth.

“Smarter water use also means lower water bills for Territorians. We are investing this money to reduce water use and bills.
