Job-creating Infrastructure project awarded to NT Construction Company

Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Nicole Manison today announced a tender award for an $18 million job-creating infrastructure project that will benefit the Territory’s sports-loving community.

Ms Manison said local construction company Sunbuild Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to build a new Netball Stadium at Marrara.

“The Territory Labor Government is proud to be delivering this exciting, job-creating project – it will be a fantastic facility.

“Netball is one of the most popular sports in the Northern Territory with over 4000 registered members and this new facility will create better opportunities for local players and allow Territorians to enjoy the sport comfortably all year round.

“We brought forward $10 million to kick start the project last year and the Australian Government is now investing a further $8 million for this key piece of infrastructure.

“Following a thorough consultation period with key user groups, the need for adequate car parking and medical access was raised.  I’m pleased the final design will address these requirements, including additional underground carparks.”

“A traffic study – commissioned in July 2017 – will also identify any potential issues with increased traffic volume in the area to ensure safety and useability in the precinct,” Ms Manison said.

Key features of the design include a new fully air-conditioned indoor netball stadium which will house four national standard netball courts with sprung floor surface, change rooms, amphitheatre style spectator seating and corporate facilities and administration offices which will allow Netball NT to attract and host National and International events.

This facility will provide flexibility to host other non-netball sporting and non-sporting events and will be economical to operate for its day to day purposes in the long-term. Key features include;

Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, said the stadium would be a great new community asset that would allow the popular sport of netball to be played all year round and attract national events.

“This new indoor netball facility is a great example of the Coalition Government’s absolute commitment to ensuring Territorians have access to the same level of amenity as people living in larger centres around the country,” Senator Scullion said.

Member for Sanderson Kate Worden said the new Netball Stadium would benefit local players from right across the Territory, building capacity in the sport.

“We know these world-class facilities will have an impact for many generations to come,” Ms Worden said.

Federal Regional Development Minister, Fiona Nash said she was thrilled to invest $8 million into the project.

“I aim to help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and great sports facilities are a big part of that,” Minister Nash said.

Ms Manison said construction is expected to begin in early 2018 after an initial design period, creating many local jobs.
