A principal who has spent almost thirty years making a difference to the lives
of thousands of Territory children has been awarded ‘Principal of the Year’ at
tonight’s Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards.
Sandy Cartwright, Principal of Alawa Primary School has worked in schools across the Top End since 1990 and tonight has been formally recognised for her passion and dedication to her school, staff and students.
Sandy is one of seven Territory award winners who have been celebrated at World Teachers’ Day events across the Territory.
The annual awards recognise the contribution that educators make to Territory students.
The winners of the Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards were announced by Minister for Education, Eva Lawler.
“Congratulations to the award recipients and finalists – it’s fantastic to see educators celebrated from right across the Territory.
“The Territory Labor Government believes that investing in our educators is key to ensuring the Territory is the most improving school system in the country. We have some of the most passionate and dedicated staff in the Territory, all working hard to ensure that our students get the best start in life.
“Tonight is a very special night for seven award recipients and the category finalists. Their accomplishments and dedication to Territory students is formally recognised in front of their peers.
“Every educator working in Territory schools makes an impact to the lives of our students every day.”
The overall winners for the 2017 ‘Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards’ are:

Jodii Waterbury, Jabiru Area School - Northern Territory Aboriginal Educator of the Year
Demelza Canuto, Rosebery Primary School - Northern Territory Special Educator of the Year
Simon Rowlands, Bradshaw Primary School - Northern Territory Early Childhood and Primary Teacher of the Year
Donna Capes, Clyde Fenton Primary School - Northern Territory School Leader of the Year Award
Wendy Troe, Nhulunbuy High School - Northern Territory Secondary Teacher of the Year
