Investing in Generational Change: University Scholarships Open for Territory School Leavers

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government is offering 40 scholarships to NT school leavers who opt to stay and undertake their university study in the Territory in 2019.

The scholarships are worth $5000 per year for each year of a recipient’s chosen degree.

To be eligible, applicants need to:

  • have finished year 12 in 2017 or 2018
  • have completed the NT Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET) or equivalent and received an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) above 80
  • be an NT resident and be enrolled to study in their first undergraduate degree in the NT
  • be enrolled to study full-time (four units per semester or equivalent)
  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • not be working full-time.

Scholarships are also available to NT school leavers who will study interstate because their course is not offered in the Territory and whose degree will qualify them for employment in a field listed on the NT Skilled Occupation Priority List (NTSOPL).

Applications close on 8 March, 2019.

Quotes from Acting Minister for Education, Natasha Fyles.

“The Territory Labor Government’s number one priority is jobs for Territorians.

“We are investing in Territorians by supporting them to further their knowledge and skills, to ensure local people can take up skilled job opportunities here in the Territory.

“We know that when our kids leave to study interstate, many of them do not return. We want to help stem that brain drain by keeping our best and brightest here in the Territory, to give them the training they need to get good jobs, and to keep them here for the long term.

“Our government is investing in all areas of education and training, from early childhood through to school years; apprenticeships and traineeships and higher learning.

“Unlike the CLP, who slashed education funding, the Territory Labor Government knows that investing in the education, training and skilling of our people is not just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do.”
