Creating Jobs and Boosting Health Services: Chemotherapy Expansion Construction Progressing

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government is improving cancer treatment for Territorians with the expansion of the Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre nearing completion.

The multi-million dollar expansion allows more Territorians to get the life-saving treatment they need closer to home.

Local company Sitzler Pty Ltd was awarded the project that has created 60 jobs for Territorians.

At full operation, the new chairs will increase the centre’s capacity by more than 50% and accommodate an increase in chemotherapy patients as demand grows.

The expansion will also support improved integration of care by including space for wrap-around services to be provided at the site.

The expansion includes:

  • An additional 12 chemotherapy chairs;
  • An extension of the waiting area;
  • A treatment room;
  • New consulting rooms;
  • A new medication room;
  • An allied health office; and
  • Development of related support areas including storage and amenities.

The facility is expected to be fully operational by March 2019.

Quotes from the Minister for Health, Natasha Fyles:

“The Territory Labor Government’s top priority is jobs and this life changing facility not only improves cancer treatment for Territorians but boosts jobs – with 60 people employed during construction.”

“All Territorians are entitled to access to high quality health services.”

“We promised Territorians we would improve cancer services and we are delivering. Expanding chemotherapy services at the Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre represents a significant milestone in delivering top quality health care and significantly improving access to cancer services for Territorians.”

“We know that many Territory families need access to these services locally, that’s why this Government is investing in generational change by building better health services.”
